100 struggling brands in the midst of Covid-19
This research covers an important historical milestone in the UK’s history. The six-month period at the start of 2020 was the most treacherous period in the history of most businesses. The term ‘unprecedented’ found new meaning. Despite loans from the banks, and a furlough scheme, it placed a major strain on businesses.
We evaluated major announcements of job losses from UK businesses. We then considered what impact they had on the business. This revealed that the job losses were so significant that the businesses would never be the same again.
In particular, we revealed two characteristic groups. The first were businesses already struggling due to macro trends working against them. The pandemic therefore brought forward and intensified activities that were already in progress. However, the second group were much more unfortunate. They were profitable and growing before being hit by a potentially devastating blow.
The research also revealed valuable insights about the businesses that didn't announce job losses. Many leveraged diversified product portfolios or simply doubled down with clear visions and efficient business models. These factors hold the key to success as we move beyond the pandemic and back to a new normal.
